What is a type?

A type is a partbred (such as an Irish Cob x Irish Draught Horse, or a Gypsy Cob x Shire or Clydesdale) which is produced from crossing different selected breeds, and can therefore only have a pedigree displaying those different breeds.

Is the Drum Horse a type?

Yes, because ‘drum horse’ (like ‘racehorse’) is a job description for any suitable breed (purebred) or type (partbred).

According to all ‘Drum Horse’ registries, a Drum Horse is not a breed (purebred); it is a type (partbred)—a Gypsy x Clydesdale or Shire. According to all ‘Drum Horse’ registries, a Drum Horse can therefore only have a pedigree displaying both Gypsy and Clydesdale or Shire (percentages of those breeds). However, all ‘Drum Horse’ registries are writing their own Drum Horse Breed Standards when they could only write Drum Horse Type Standards. The breed standards for purebred horse breeds used as Ceremonial Drum Horses have already been written in the countries of origin of those breeds (England, Scotland and Ireland).

The only type (partbred) used as a Ceremonial Drum Horse (which was in the 1998s-1990s) is an Irish Cob Part Bred (Irish Cob x Irish Draught Horse). A Drum Horse registry for Ceremonial Drum Horses that is not the breed registry for the Irish Cob Part Bred, but which claims to be a registry for the Irish Cob Part Bred using the name Drum Horse instead of the true name for the breed, therefore, makes no sense and serves to confuse and endanger that type. To resolve this situation and protect that specific type of Irish Cob Part Bred (Irish Cob x Irish Draught Horse), TCR (which is in Ireland), will therefore (where requested), also register a Maxi (15.3hh to 16.2hh) Irish Cob Part Bred (Irish Cob x Irish Draught Horse) as an Irish Drum Horse and a Large (16.3hh and over) Irish Cob Part Bred (Irish Cob x Irish Draught Horse) as a Classic Irish Drum Horse.
