Show Cob

Show Cob is the name given in Ireland (aka the Republic of Ireland) and in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) for a heavy-boned, short-legged, stocky type of horse from 14.2hh to 15.2hh (Standard) and from 15.3hh to 16.2hh (Maxi).

Because the elegant Connemara Pony and Irish Draught Horse (two Irish native breeds) contributed to the breeding of the Show Cob, and because the Connemara Pony and Irish Draught Horse are both performance (sport) breeds, the Show Cob is an athletic animal with a good riding cob shoulder and chest and straight hocks. The Show Cob is associated with hunting, as well as showing, in Ireland and Great Britain.

NOTE: It is because coloured horses were not held in high regard in Ireland and Great Britain before 2000, that the Show Cob was predominantly solid-coloured in Ireland and Great Britain before 2000.
