Ceremonial Drum Horse

aka Drum Horse

A Drum Horse is not a breed

Drum Horses are a genre (group) of horse breeds and crossbreds (partbreds) known to have been used to carry a set of drums in parades and exhibitions. Because a Drum Horse is therefore not a breed, it cannot have a single defining breed standard. Because Drum Horses fit into a genre (group) of breeds and crossbreeds (partbreds) of a certain type, a Drum Horse therefore has a type standard requiring the characteristics common to the Drum Horse genre (group).

The Drum Horse Type Standard

A Drum Horse (aka Ceremonial Drum Horse) is draught in type (horse or cob), has leg-feathering, and is no less than 15.3hh.

NOTE: Because a Drum Horse fits into a genre (group) of breeds and crossbreeds, the Drum Horse Type Standard must be used in conjunction with the breed standards of breeds used as Drum Horses.

Drum Horse Breeds

Irish Cob

Shire Horse

Clydesdale Horse

NOTE: In some cases where crossbreeds have been used as Drum Horses, the Friesian Horse has been in the crossbreeding.

TCR Drum Registration

Because a Drum Horse fits into a genre (group) of breeds and crossbreeds of a certain type, TCR now registers Drum Horses together with the name of their breed or crossbreed. Not only does TCR Drum Horse registration now define the Drum Horse genre (group), but it also allows those who love all hairy-legged draught types (horse or cob) to have one genre (group) registry without having to register and show with the different breed and crossbreed registries. TCR is therefore providing a genuine beneficial reason for having a Drum Horse Register - i.e. a Drum Horse Register that also recognises the breeds and crossbreds used as Drum Horses (which is essential).

NOTE: A breed (which therefore already has its breed standard) should not be registered as a Drum Horse without including the name of that breed, because it is damaging to that breed and is also confusing. Registering a Drum Horse with the name of its actual breed is respectful to the registry for that breed, as it does not give the impression that their breed is being ‘taken over’ by a Drum Horse registry.
